Build A Bankroll Challenge Update 27-2-13

Things have been going pretty well in the challenge and Im now playing 4 tables of NL25 Zoom. At one point it looked like I were going to have to drop NL25 after I ran in to AA with my KK and then ran in to a rivered set as well. After that point I have ran pretty well though which was always going to be important.

I still have some reads on some players from when I were playing NL25 last year which has meant me opening up a bit more and going after a couple more spots. Heres the latest standings:-

Build A Bankroll Challenge Update 25-2-13

Heres the latest standings from the challenge and I am now at the point where I can add in a couple of tables of NL25 until I either get to $200 where I will just play NL25 or dropping the two tables if I drop to about $110.

Build A Bankroll Challenge

I decided to end the stake I were on the other day after finding myself getting more and more frustrated with how I were playing and also a consequence of that was me getting more and more frustrated because I were not doing as well as I thought I should be which was causing me problems at the table. My staker was absolutely superb throughout the stake and also with ending the stake and I have to say a big thank you to him for how he handled it all and the support he gave me.

That left me with $6 in my Stars account and the decision to take some time away from playing which is what I had set my mind on or re-depositing straight away and going from there.

A third option was what I went for though and I thought it might be fun to quickly grind $6 up as high as I could and see where I could get to with some aggressive bankroll management.

Below is the plan that I set myself how I were going to go about it:-

Bankroll amounts for moving up and moving down on the left and right respectively.

$20 2xNl2 2xNl5 drop down at $15
$30 4xNL5 drop 2 tables at $20
$50 2xNL5 2xNL10 drop down at $30
$80 4xNL10 drop down at $60
$140 2xNL10 2xNL25 drop down at $100
$200 4NL25 drop down at $150
$350 2xNL25 2xNL50 drop down at $250
$500 4xNL50 drop down at $400

Ive had a lot of fun so far and am actually enjoying playing poker again. Below are the results that I have had so far:-

Starting from $6 I quickly made my way up to NL5.

Started adding in a couple of tables of NL10 before playing just NL10

As of today my BR is standing at just above $130 so hopefully in the next day or so I should be able to start adding in a NL25 table or two.

Zoom Poker Has Got Me

I used to love Rush on Full Tilt but thought it hurt my game so much that I vowed when Stars released Zoom that I would try and stay away from it. Well I did quite well and its taken me from when it were released to now before it has finally got me hooked.

I love table selecting and Zoom takes that away from me. I do not do it as hard as some people but I still have a system that gives me what I feel is the best chance of playing against weaker players. Zoom gives me instant poker though and for someone with little time to play I am finding I can get in a lot of hands just whenever I want rather than been 20 minutes or so in to a session before I have 12 or more tables running. The down side is that people play tighter ranges meaning even the fish are folding their weaker holdings but again on the plus side the long term comes around quicker.

So far it has been going pretty well and theres some awful play that I keep seeing which suggests the games are pretty soft but only time will tell but I will leave you a couple of examples of the type of plays I am seeing a lot of:-

Believe it or not but this next hand is against a 12/10 reg. I actually think he is giving up on the turn and I am trying to milk his weaker holdings.

Bad Habits? What Bad Habits?

Fine Tuning My Game

So below is a list of the worst stuff that I do when I am at the Poker tables. Apparently getting them down on paper and out in public is the first step to getting the better of them and actually changing them.

So here we go:-

Bad Habits I Need To Break

1.Checking HEM during Sessions- Im not as bad as I were with this but I still do it occasionally. The hope is to get in to a habit eventually where I only check say once a week but that is hard to do while playing on a stake and also going over a lot of HH`s.

2. Playing Back At People Without Good Reason- Im pretty bad with this one. The other day I spewed off half a buy in when a reg limp/called pre and then raised me on a paired board and showed up with AA. I also had another where I had T7s on say a 322 board and get raised in a blind battle and decided to 3bet and have to fold when he shoved. Easily my most expensive bad habit.

3. Folding Weak Hands To River Raises- Im getting better with this one as I seem to be realizing that people are raising the river with only nuttish hands. Tied in with this one is not believing when people only take lines that suggest I am beat. Again though not as bad as I used to be.

4. Not Being As Aggro With Short Stackers
- This one is a good/bad habit as a lot of my play against SS`s is probably +EV in a vacuum but as like the other day when I lost 5 all in hands in a row it does affect my mindset. I also need to realize that although the shorties will 3bet light and fold to 4bets, when I 3bet and they shove for the most part I wont see worse than JJ+/AK.

5. Not Being Results Oriented- Again this one is a pretty bad one for me. Im not getting my head around the fact that I need to play each hand separately and play the hand the best I can but in doing that I will also take in to account the result of each hand which will then again determine my mindset. I still need to keep to the first part but need to cut out the second part and just realize that I can actually win a hand by playing it correctly rather than winning money in the hand. Sometimes I can win a hand by folding like I should have done in a couple of examples of hands above.

January Round Up And Future Thoughts

It is fair to say I did it pretty tough Poker wise in January. I had what was my first consistent spell of run bad at NL50 which lead to me spewing quite a bit and also my first real tilt in well over 2 months.

I ended the month down nearly 5 buy ins after setting off the month like a house on fire. The biggest swing in the month came at the end with me dropping over 9 buy ins which is probably also my biggest downswing by quite some distance in over a year of Poker. At the end of the month I only managed to win 5 sessions out of my last 23.

Strange game is Poker that I did more work on my game in this month than I have probably down in any month in the past 3 years and feel that my game has come on quite a bit. I am 6 hours in to coaching with a mid stakes player and I feel I am learning a ton of stuff and my game is moving on but my problems with spew have held me back once again and this is also something that I am working on with my mental coach Elliot Roe.

It was also in this month that I made the decision to stop posting as much in the FR forum on 2+2. I wouldnt be surprised if I spent between 30-60 minutes a day on there posting advice on what on the whole are pretty straight forward and easy spots. That time could be a lot better spent by actually working on my own game instead of trying to help others out. I will still be posting in threads in PG&C and the odd thread in the FR forum but I am going to be keeping it to a minimum as the time at the moment could be a lot better spent elsewhere when it comes to poker.

There are a ton of areas that I need to work on and that is my focus now. I know what a lot of the problems are and it is a case now of how much do I want it and how much I can change the bad habits in my game.

Top 10 Cash Game Leaks

January 5th, 2013

Top Ten Cash Game Leaks

Cash Game Leaks

1. Not Folding Enough – Be it pre-flop or post-flop many players are either playing too many hands or simply taking weak hands too far after seeing a flop.

2. Calling Too Much – “Its suited so I call” or “I called to see if I hit my Ace”. Two of the fish`s favorites. If you are calling the only way you can win the hand is by having the best hand at showdown. Many players never get past this simple concept.

3. Not Value Betting Enough – For some reason people tend to bet less with their made hands which goes against what the above two leaks say. They either bet less or get tricky and miss out on a ton of value.

4. Not Being Positionally Aware – Position affects everything in Poker, the later someones position the weaker range they tend to have. Some people simply do not adapt their ranges to this concept when deciding what hands to open, what hands to call a raise with, and what hands to 3bet with.

5. Not Having A Plan – A lot of players are simply playing the game street by street and never thinking ahead. It is almost akin to A Snooker player simply potting a red ball without even thinking about getting position on a colour.  Before you do anything at a poker table – think.

6. Money Matters – Playing on too small a bankroll is a problem that a lot of players have to face.  Moving up is good, not moving down after losing a lot of buy ins at the new level is bad. A lot of players simply can not face the thought of moving down when it is not going well. The fact is that you can not improve your game if you have no money to play.

7. Tilt – Everyone has tilted at one point or another. A lot of the best players that make the most improvements simply have it under control and it is not something that affects their game for the most. Tilt is going to hamper your improvement and waste mental energy that could be spent on making your game better. Get it under control.

8. Basing Decisions On Too Small A Sample – Most regulars are using HUD`s these days but never a day goes by with out someone posting a hand in a forum where they are basing a decision on for instance someones 3bet range when the villain has only played 20 or so hands and is showing a 3bet range of 10%.

9. Not Stealing Enough – Stealing Blinds in Poker is like printing money if you can learn to do it well. Most people don’t though, most people either don’t think it is worth it or misapply concepts and end up doing it badly.

10. Thinking You Are The Next Tom Dwan – Someone maybe, but you are probably not. There is a reason that Tom Dwan can get away with doing what he does. That is because he is an exceptional reader of hands and people. He can probably explain in great detail why he makes every play. If you can make a good legitimate explanation for every `out of the box` play you make then great, but I bet you can’t.

Moving Blog Hosts Is No Fun

2012 Stake By Stake Results & Review

2012 Stake By Stake Review

NL5

So 2012 was the year that I actually bit the bullet and moved away from the god awful Ipoker network and started to play on Pokerstars and once again take Poker semi seriously after what really was a lacklustre 2011 where I fell out of love with Poker due to tilt problems and the Full Tilt mess which still left a bitter taste.

The joys of running my own business ment that in quiet times like at the beginning of the year I got to play Poker while I worked and I started playing at NL5 and played HUDless for the majority of the time and basically just donked around and started enjoying poker again.

Tables were pretty soft and results were good and tilt was kept to a minimum for most of my spell at NL5.

NL10

I quickly built up my roll and made the step up to NL10. Again for the most I was playing HUdless until I figured out that my works computer had just about enough memory to display about 5 stats on screen without crashing and that I actually could use my HEM license on another computer.

To be honest I really didnt notice that much, if any, difference between how the games played and the players for the most made the same mistakes by calling down too light and not been able to fold when obviously beat. If anyone playing these levels can get a good grip on value betting then they could crush them with out too much trouble.

It was at NL10 where a few of my tilt problems started to creep in. Now my tilt has never had anything to do with the amounts of money, its simply about losing most of the time and then splits off in to different types of losing. So about 3 months in and my rage tilt was back and was just the same at NL10 as it were at NL100 a couple of years previously.

The 20K break even stretch can basically be put down to me been on tilt for that whole time it were that bad. Obviously that would plague me throughout the year.

NL25

I found NL25 pretty tough to break in to and it took me a couple of failed attempts and about 15K hands before I got my head around how the games played. A combination of running bad when I did move up and tilting when I ran bad made this even more difficult for me.

After my 2nd failed attempt I honestly wondered if the games had passed me by and I could no longer beat the level that I used to do best at.

Once it did stick though things got better and better and results were better than I could imagine. This was the first level where I started to use some table selection and I use a pretty basic set up that helps me find pretty good tables.

This is also the first level where I would start tables religiously to try and get some HU practice in. What I found was that most regs who start tables suck pretty bad when it comes to playing HU and basically play it the same as when they play FR. This is also the first level where I got a taste of how much fake table starting goes on and some people would be sat at 5 or so tables and then not offer any action when you sit with them.

Stars really should do something about that. If you dont want to offer action then dont sit at a new FR table. During this time I also received coaching for playing Short handed and HU and this saw my game improve quite a bit and at times I were literally running over the regs who would offer action when starting tables. By the end of my time at NL25 literally non of the table starting regs would offer any action to me which also became a source of tilt as on numerous occasions I would get grimmed which itself would lead me to lose focus and tilt easily.

Results wise my target was to beat the 8bb/100 WR that I achieved in my last decent stretch at NL25 and I was aiming for about 10bb/100 which I ended up hitting. Realistically though it should have been about 15bb/100 if it wernt for the tilt problems that were making my poker life hell.

NL50

I once again got comfy at NL25 and basically didnt dare to shot take NL50 even though when I played the games it went quite well. Eventually we got the news that we were getting our FT money back and combined with the money I had on Stars I used it to help fund a car that I wanted to buy.

This meant one of two things, I either start at the bottom again and work my way up or try and get a stake. I decided on the stake because even though giving up part of my profit it meant I should make more than if I started at NL5 again.

The other plus part was that playing with someone elses money may actually help my tilt problems because I may be more caring with some one elses money. I was also wanting to be staked for NL50 which would help me make the step up. So thats what I did and in a couple of days managed to find myself someone willing to stake me.

At about the same time I was browsing through the coaching adverts like I like to do and came across a thread by Elliot Roe about Hypnotherapy. After a few discussions with him I started having sessions to try and resolve my tilt issues. Obviously I was a bit skeptical but now nearly 2 months down the line without any major tilt problems Im thankful that he has been able to help me so much.

Playing tilt free has made the step up to NL50 go pretty smoothly and now Im getting used to how it plays I can go about fixing up some of the areas that I am leaking and hopefully go about improving my WR quite a bit. Im not sure there is any drastic increase in skill level from what I have seen so far and Im wanting to kick on from here.

Overall Results For 2012 & 2013 Goals

2013 Goals

1. Keep playing tilt free poker.
2. Try and move up through the levels and win at each one I play.
3. Work on improving my game.
4. Have a +$2K month.
5. Have a +$5K month.

Merry Christmas Everyone

December 29th, 2012

Just a quick post to wish everyone who reads this blog a Merry Christmas and also hoping that you all had a gone one.

Luckily the world didnt end and we are now coming to the end of another year. Its been a strange year when it has come to Poker but I will get in to that when I do my year in review in the New Year.

Poker wise at the moment its going very well, Im still playing tilt free, heading towards 2 months now, at NL50 and results so far have been promising. Im trying to identify my leaks as I go along which does seem pretty easy at the moment as my mind isnt filled with useless clutter like my own bad beat stories.

Blog wise Im thinking of moving over to wordpress.org the same place where my works website is held. I do find that interface a bit easier to use for some reason and It should make my blog posts on here look more professional than they do at the moment and just makes it a bit easier for me to update both blogs on the same platform with the same tools.

Thats all for now but will update with my years results and goals for 2013 along with my review of the year at some point. Happy New Year to you all.
